10 things that await you in Merano in spring
Around the VillaVerde
We deliberately opened VillaVerde in spring after 2 years of construction! Now that the apple trees around the villa are blossoming and everything is green, the warm season finally begins after the long winter. Perfect for you to enjoy your breakfast in the sun-drenched coffeehouse, but also to let the last hours of the day end comfortably on our large terrace between lemon trees! Also around the VillaVerde, in Lagundo, in Merano and its surroundings there is much to discover and experience! We have summarized the 10 most interesting things you should experience in spring:
1: Visit the Merano Flower Festival
The Merano Flower Festival is an event dedicated to flowers and ornamental plants that takes place from 25 to 28 April as part of the Merano Spring. The diversity and grace of the plant species on display at the festival underline the beauty and quality that the city of Merano has to offer its guests. The festival takes place in the centre of Merano, which can easily be reached by public bus from the VillaVerde in a few minutes. The bus stops directly in front of the Villa.
2: Experience the apple blossom
The VillaVerde is surrounded by apple trees. Of course you can experience the apple blossom (from mid-April) very easy with pancakes, fresh fruits and your first fragrant coffee from the French Press during your breakfast. You can experience even more of the wonderfully fragrant apple blossom during a short walk around the house!
3: Visiting the Algunder Waalweg
The "Waalwge" accompany centuries-old waterways, which were created to irrigate fields and orchards. And just above the VillaVerde runs by far the most beautiful representative of its kind: the Algunder Waalweg. It takes its water at the wild Töll, the transition between the Vinschgau and the Merano basin. From there, this unique hiking trail crosses the gentle slopes over Algund to seamlessly connect to the famous Tappeinerweg at Merano. You can easily reach the Algunder Waalweg on foot in about 25 minutes on foot from VillaVerde.
4: Strolling in the Old Town of Merano
Strolling through the historic old town of Merano pays off twice in spring: on the one hand numerous shops, boutiques and cozy pubs are tempting, on the other hand the garden city presents itself in spring from its most beautiful side. It blooms on every corner, especially on the spa promenade, where you can experience the Mediterranean spring blossom in all its splendour. Thanks to its location and the southern climate, it is usually so warm here in spring that you can leave your jackets and sweaters in the VillaVerde :-)
5: Visit the botanical gardens
There is no doubt that the botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are among the most popular excursion destinations in Merano and the surrounding area. This is also true in spring: here, in one of the 8 garden worlds, the famous tulip blossom welcomes you: tens of thousands of tulips stand here in their full splendour in spring and, together with many flowering daffodils, offer you the perfect floral start into the warm season!
6: A ride on the Algund and Vellau chairlift
The trip with the single chair lift from Algund to Vellau is a unique experience of nature. Slowly you float through the vineyards and forests from Algund to Vellau. From there, the nostalgic Retro-Korblift takes you directly to the Leiter Alm at 1,550 metres above sea level. There you can stop off at the popular alpine hut or take an excursion along the Alta Via Meranese.
7: Visit the Merano Friday Market
The largest market in the region starts at the Merano railway station and extends to the old town of Merano. The Merano Friday Market is a must for our guests and for good reason: hundreds of market stalls line up here from the wide Praderplatz to Meinhardstrasse in the direction of the old town and offer a colourful conglomeration of food, specialities, clothing and shoes, souvenirs and much, much more!
8: Enjoy in the restaurant Zur blauen Traube
The Restaurant Zur Blaue Traube is located in a 17th century listed building in the centre of Algund, just a short walk from the VillaVerde. Although the guesthouse was only reopened in March 2019, it is already one of our absolute favourites! Chef and chef Christoph Huber has quickly established a fixed place in the VillaVerde Foodguide with his motto "Radikal Lokal".
9: Visit the Therme Merano
No matter how beautiful our magnificent 25 metre indoor and outdoor pool may be, no matter how unique our natural bathing pond may be: a visit to the Merano Thermal Baths is almost a must for our guests: 25 pools await you here indoors and outdoors (with park!), plus a newly designed sauna and relaxation landscape.
10: Visit the museums in Merano
5 museums await you in Merano, which should not only be on your list if the weather is not sooo nice. Especially the newly opened Merano City Museum in the magnificent Palais Mamming should not be missed! With the Merano City Museum, the Princely Castle and the Merano Women's Museum are located right in the centre of Merano, just a few minutes' walk from each other.
